About me

Hi! My name is Marieke Oprel. I am historian, specialized in West-European political history after 1945. As historian I am trained to conduct research, to study the use and abuse of history and to write about the past. I try to contextualize conflicts and to provide different perspectives on events and narratives in an attempt to give insight in the other side of a story.

At the moment I am PhD-candidate in Political History at the Vrije Universiteit and affiliated as associate researcher at the Duitsland Instituut (the Institute for German Studies) of the University of Amsterdam. My research concerns the Dutch post-war policies towards German enemy citizens, a forgotten page in Dutch history.

Besides my PhD-research I am president of Jong KNHG. This is the Board of young Historians, part of the Royal Netherlands Historical Society. I am also sprecher for the Arbeitskreis deutsch-niederländische Geschichte (ADNG), a work group of scholars working in the field of German-Dutch History. And I am reporter for historici.nl: the main platform for historians in the Netherlands.
